Treatment For Hardening Of The Arteries
Atherosclerosis is a condition wherein debris are being collected in the arterial walls and form plaques. These plaques tend to narrow the arteries and even cause total blockages or severe damages in the veins. People who suffer from this condition are at high risks of developing heart problems. There are various factors considered to cause atherosclerosis, and most of them are under a person’s lifestyle habits. The treatment for hardening of the arteries may depend on the severity of the condition and the overall health of the patient.
There is no concrete answer as to why atherosclerosis happens but studies say that factors such as high cholesterol levels, nicotine from cigarettes and other derivatives, and certain health conditions like hypertension and diabetes increase a person’s risk of developing the condition. Some studies concluded that the problem happens because of the natural response of the body to such elements. They say that when the arteries are recurrently being damaged, the fatty tissues surrounding it tries to repair the damages, but only makes the lining of the arteries sticky enough to accumulate excess components, and as time passes by, these certain components become thick causing the narrowing of the blood vessels.
The treatment for hardening of the arteries may be done through various methods which may include lifestyle changes, medications, herbal remedies, and in some worse cases, surgeries. One of the most common medication given to patients with atherosclerosis is Angiotensin II receptor blockers. It works by blocking a certain component called angiotensin II which is responsible for constricting the blood vessels and triggering the heart to pump more blood causing hypertension. Other medications given are anticoagulants- which prevents blood clots from happening, cholesterol medications- to help maintain healthy levels of good cholesterol and diuretics.
Those who are suffering from a more severe type of atherosclerosis may need to undergo surgeries. Angioplasty is one of the known procedures done to clear the pathway of blood which has been narrowed by plaques. It is done by inserting a catheter towards the affected vein and inserting a device, either a balloon or stent to artificially expand the vein. Bypass surgeries are also considered to be an option in treating the condition. This is done by extracting a vein from a specific site of the body and will be reconnected to bypass the affected vein.
All methods of treatment for hardening of the arteries need to be consulted to a doctor. They will be giving patients a variety of options that will fit a person’s lifestyle and needs.
