Insomnia is a serious problem in America
A 2002 study on sleep habits of more than one million people reported that people who slept seven hours per night had the longest life. Those who slept 8 hours or more, or 6 hours or less had higher mortality rates. People with insomnia are not the high mortality rate, which supported earlier evidence. People who took sleeping pills, however, had survival rates.
Insomnia is rarely fatal, except in exceptional cases such as the genetic disorder known as fatal familial insomnia. This degenerative brain disease develops in late adulthood. It is progressive and the individual develops insomnia rebels which eventually becomes fatal.
Almost 200,000 car accidents in the United States and 1,500 deaths from these accidents are caused by sleepiness. Studies continue to report that drowsy driving is as dangerous as drinking and driving. Estimates on fatigue as a cause of car accidents are 1% to 56%, according to the study.
In a major 1995 survey, for example, 33% of respondents said they had asleep at the wheel and 10% of these people had had accidents because of it. A study suggests strongly that the dream was unusual, however, not just asleep at time of an accident that places people at greater risk.
Surveys conducted in 2001 and 2002, said people with insomnia had severe quality of life that was almost as poor as in people with chronic diseases such as heart failure. In these studies, people who experienced depression or anxiety are not included.
In addition to more daytime sleepiness, people with insomnia complained increased attention and memory problems compared to good sleepers. Sleepless also experience more irritability, errors at work, and poorer relationships with their families than those who sleep well.
