The nature of the real

Introduction

Here is the text of a seminar I conducted in the subject of welfare work.

I noticed a large amount of information available on administrative issues in recruitment, motivation, education, personal certification, measuring return on investment (ROI), risk assessment, reform bad habits, Coordinating all this and support him and even connect the mind and body. Well, what they think of next? All this is, of course, very good and very appropriate, especially the last part of the union body with the brain. But something is missing. Whether it be?

I think it a problem of foundation of a good life. We could begin to address, clarify what we mean by welfare in the long term. This will lead to discussions on issues to be addressed in health education. How many times have you been able to assess, share ideas and reflect to the agenda of the broader consequences well-being at work? Ever? Is it conceivable subjects beyond the risk reduction, management problems and save money? Note the type of workplace wellness programs that we have now and I wonder, is that all there is? Can we better? Can you ask? Can we offer a varied program, the issues at the heart of the quality of life that relate to the lush life, rather than survive and cope? For example can we, the employees in this case will be guided to understand the science of happiness to make better decisions that lead to greater happiness in life? Then the work and life itself, be more important? Can we talk and get help thinking of our needs, our links with other, bigger world and ourselves? Can we be helped to think clearly, act with reason and make the most of our freedoms? Besides, what it means to be an ethical person and secular values to inform our loyalties and commitments?

If these issues are attractive, is likely to benefit from the exploration and development of a wellness program REAL.

The format the webinar

To keep things interesting, I'll ask you some questions on the fly. I know you can not answer, but the Q can help putting the ideas into a useful context.

There will be a follow-up opportunities. I also published essays on my website-SeekWellness.com/wellness REAL W. Of course, I am in Stevens Point in the conference July 17 to 22. REAL Welfare My presentation is scheduled for Monday afternoon.

So let expectations get started: What are yours for the seminar?

My goals

I have five objectives:

  1. WELLNESS-To explain what has always tried to suggest, since the 70's when Jack Travis, Bob Allen, Bill Hettler, and I gained a little traction for Ce concept introduced decades ago by Dr. Halbert Dunn.

  2. To provide sufficient basic knowledge about the nature of what is now well-being true appeal to you to decide if this approach deserves closer inspection. Is the address or the type of evolution is to see well-being at work? My goal is to convince you it is.
  3. As an incentive to become a true fan of welfare, personal and an agent in the workplace. A co-conspirator, perhaps, but not an undercover mole. Lovers of true welfare, should come out and to make their voices heard.
  4. To convey enough about the real welfare will try that in a workplace.
  5. To become a program of works rich with positive elements of education that could lead many employees to the quality of Life goes on.

I am not getting carried away now? Stop before going too far, I know you only have half an hour, less than now. Normally, it takes me one week for each of these objectives.

However, time is a luxury they can afford. Things are in a terrible state.

I'll start with a review of social assistance, which is one of the goals. The term has been around for over a half-century. It is intended to convey the well-being a life full of consequences for self and others, good ideas, lifestyles and embrace personal responsibility. Unfortunately, it has been used to promote a range of medical services, holistic remedies, professional services and a wide range of products.

Because no Supreme Court is not the well-being or welfare of the Vatican or any other official authority sanction, no consensus on what is good, sensible, sanctified or otherwise lawful and appropriate information on the use of the word. Not surprisingly, After years of laissez-faire, the uncontrolled use of welfare has come to mean what one wants it to mean.

Therefore, we think of wellness as a philosophy or mode of thought which, like our own species, is evolving. So far, the term has not always developed the best way. He did well, in my opinion, in the workplace. the keyword is popular, but what is offered in most workplaces is not even close to being on welfare.

I mean the basic form of health, as I described in my book of 1976 High Level Wellness: An Alternative to Doctors, drugs and disease.

Welfare should not be confused with risk reduction, medical tests or health of the different educational structures.

What happened for 30 years, but never forget, the future ahead.

Let's not limit to this trend and move towards a true programming welfare. It can not happen unless you and others who work with companies choose to adopt a more ambitious agenda for the education environment job.

If the risk reduction, medical supervision and detection of disease and similar efforts in the prevention of disease would an average level of education, and I am generous here, be real are a university post graduate study continues.

Current programs focus are useful and medical bills, essential for the physical health of employees, especially those who care not quite adequate. These education efforts for the basic preventive health provided a reasonable return for most companies and organizations. However, welfare, not even close.

And no evidence Wellness real efforts at workplace in the context of the current problems represent a modern way of fiddling while Rome burns, or the Titanic sink-or U-pick imaging.

Do you agree?

Waiting for REAL Worksite Wellness

Before making a go / no go choice, think that the welfare program would be as if the key events the agenda be real.

Here are a half-dozen or more expectations I have for the true welfare if firms and other organizations to develop programs that will take to introduce and guide learning in areas of skills to be REAL. These projected results containing details on the nature of true welfare. Here we go.

If the workplace that offers real Well, you can expect:

  1. Employees who eventually learn to get greater satisfaction from their work and lives.

  2. Employees are supported and guided in an embrace of a much higher level of personal responsibility, not only for health but for overall quality of their lives.
  3. Employees who develop a solid understanding of the nature of happiness, based on research in recent years in the field of positive psychology, and gain views on how to experience more of it more often.
  4. Employees who accept the idea that Life may, from time to time, positively ebullient, even without alcohol and drugs.
  5. Employees have examined issues life eternal ideas on the meaning and purpose. Try not to assume that workers are too stupid, uneducated, stupid or intimidated to express or if you Want to learn more about the existential questions, cosmic wonders and a library full of wisdom varied supply for man of the 21st century have been off-limits, unknowable our ancestors.
  6. Employees who learn the proven principles of thought critical in situations of daily life and practical ways to apply these principles. Some examples of the concepts are simple but very effective, as Carl Sagan ten o'clock BS famous points system detection. Education for the real welfare even lead to a better class of elected officials, and employees would be less inclined to adopt charlatans, entertainers in the world bloviators flakes Total class to high office. I hope you give me a little more credit here for not identifying certain politicians who represent all or most of these qualities has recently noted. It was not easy, but this is not a partisan seminar.
  7. With an offer true welfare, workers earn a new respect for the nature of the Science. The objective is to promote both a better understanding and appreciation of reason and evidence-based decision making. (This the ability of well-being has profound implications for the reconfiguration of the everyday beliefs preferences of employees do, as if spending money on lottery tickets, unproven medical products or other medical treatments, food supplements and others. It also has implications for how employees could be sensitive claims of astrologers, researchers of Bigfoot, psychics, televangelists and other Supporters of magical thinking. Two examples of the benefits expected from a welfare program that truly works promotes scientific literacy would be a recognition the random nature of events and circumstances facing the conclusion of such a perspective the stone age, as the idea that "There is a reason for everything." And, of course, employees are much less likely to cling to the hope of results ridiculously unlikely, as the Chicago Cubs ever play in the World Series.)

Still with me? I began to use this list of changes you can expect scheduling of real welfare that the momentum of being at work. Let me mention two more that you will appreciate how is it different real reason, exuberance and freedom of true welfare today is the so-called "welfare" in the workplace.

  8. Employees to develop higher levels of comfort in the reflection on values. They would be able to speak their ideas and to listen respectfully to what others have to say about decency and ethical standards to be applied at work and other situations. This capability is a discipline that promotes emotional reflection on human values instrumental to democratic societies. Payment of the registration of an area as the programming skills in the workplace would increase the tolerance of differences, mutual understanding and progress in family, community businesses and examples of harmony. of common decency, promoted by all religions, but none of them exclusive, are integrity, honesty, kindness and justice.

We release all around these four words, integrity, honesty, benevolence and justice, but what they mean exactly? Do we need religion to meet and honor the values? I think not. Worth-right in their own society works best when these values are shared and respected. A little detail on each of four qualities may be in order.

  • Integrity includes truthfulness, fidelity to promises, sincerity and honesty.
  • Reliability includes fidelity, loyalty and reliability.
  • Benevolence implies a willingness to refrain from harming others or their property.
  • The equity includes the recognition, accountability, justice, tolerance and cooperation.

Have you heard of these issues and discussed in the context welfare at work? Or maybe I should change.

Review what's next

May, three questions come to mind at this point:

  1. How to start doing some or all of these
  2. Gow always make the transition towards the welfare and REAL
  3. What are the barriers?

The answer to each of these questions is the same. You can quote me, if you want. The answer is: do not know. How can we profess to know something right now?

Of course, we study issues and speculate. I wrote essays on how this could be done. Contact me if you want them-and/or attend meetings in the well-being Conference of the real well-being.

All would be if their energies were channeled to think and explore ways to find the best approaches to meet these challenges. Of course, if it were easy, would be doing.

I end this with a summary of a article in the Wall Street Journal on Wednesday about the welfare program instead Amerigas work I believe strongly supports the case for real.

Amerigas spent half a million dollars in projected WW 2008. Nothing remotely RW about this expense, the medical evidence was clear. What did they gain from this investment? According to Anna Mathews, The Wall Street Journal who wrote the article entitled "When All Else Fails: forcing workers to healthy habits, not much. Healthcare costs at least 3 percent of what would have been without the program.

It is a quote from the executive in charge Amerigas! He attributed the higher expenses with the cost of additional testing and follow-up care projections. Not many programs simply ignore preventive health education for the real welfare of every kind, much less communicate principles related reason, the exuberance of freedom, "or questions that can not deliver the savings in medical costs! Ergo, it is wrong to spend money on programs WW workers only provide risk reduction, testing and programming bus H ed. If you do, could represent a form of neglect, welfare workplace.

Read this article in the WSJ. This proves conclusively that only programs of welfare companies that have led participants to make changes like losing weight or quitting smoking, she has saved money.

And it Therein lies the problem. Scare people with evidence of bad habits have led to negative long-term, sustained lifestyle exceptional. The approach of risk reduction works only if employees make changes, and negative messages (for example, faces that risk or death) for short-term results, if any. And, these low-level efforts are expensive. quality of life should be evaluated by intrinsic positive reasons. And the goal is, as you remember, the reward fund is the real attitude.

Only education true welfare is to give employees a realistic chance to develop their own commitments to quality of life for life, for reasons that are inherently positive value.

On this, I'll close. Thank you again for coming. I hope that this introduction prompt greater interest in being at work, quality of life, the sound of prevention. Be well.

Help science fair for young kids?

My 7 and 5 years and / or children are studying the heart of his project for the science fair. The subject of many a question and expiry should answer this question. We are thinking to ask what contributes to heart disease and the study then make a mold of the heart, both a healthy environment and a weak heart, clay and paint. Is this "expirimental" sufficient for Toddler Youth? suggestions or ideas to help create this project?

I do not know how to drive the project must be for a child of that age, but what is described is not an experience. " A better idea would be to see what kind of exercise makes the heart beat faster. For example, "Does making jumps for 1 minute or up and down stairs a minute increase in heart rate? "
