Bring awareness of cancer in children – ideas for arts and crafts?
I'm an art teacher, and I am passionate about doing charity work, and making available to my students, such as breast cancer awareness. I was thinking of doing a lesson plan in honor of breast cancer and diseases heart (both are on different days). However, I was not sure if this idea would be receptive to the administration and parents of children. Any thoughts / ideas / suggestions / recommendations would be greatly appreciated. I should also mention that the age groups ranging from ages 5-12. Thanks
I like ideas about children's awareness about childhood cancer, although I suppose most parents may prefer if not too graphic in detail disease? Maybe talk to them through surveys or request the administration whether something similar has been done successfully in school in the past? Likely to be focus in the compassion we can show others who are sick and scared or sad? I am a craftsman of paper, so I think in terms of cards and scrapbooks. I have been involved in activities to help people with illnesses and those who have been through natural disasters, and some people really respond wonderfully to messages of hope and comfort, even total strangers. Messages children may be especially poignant and touching. Maybe you could have a special project in the class is "get good "or" thinking of you "cards for people with cancer, then sends them to a hospital ward or clinic. If you have permission a medical center, perhaps you could make a hope-for-you care for a wall mural in the building. Children can also make greeting cards general to sell and raise funds for cancer / heart disease research. Another idea that really helps some young people with life-threatening cancer or conditions is to help them make a scrapbook about her life story so far. Performing basic page layouts daily spaces and spaces blank for photos and put them in albums all ready for patients to use can be an activity for children may like to help. The presentations are not to be complicated or fancy. Covering a page with good paper, place mats 4 'x 6' photo on it and add a journaling card, you have a nice scrapbook page. Of course you can add a strip of tape or paper types or other ornaments, but the basics are that if you just use paper nice, photo mats and journaling tags. If I wanted an art activity, children can make their own background papers for scrapbooks. You could use paint and glitter, pencils, crayons, etc. and be sure to use only acid-free cardstock for matting photos protect photos of anything in the media of art that could damage the photo paper over time. I hope that the ideas we will help find a way to achieve their goals in class.
