Heart disease among Hispanic women Latino

The Hispanic Paradox

Heart disease remains the leading cause of death among women in the United States. Awareness about heart disease among women in general has increased over the years. A recent survey by the American Heart Association revealed that 62% of white women, but only 34% of Latino / Hispanic women were aware that heart disease is the greatest health threat. (Mosca, Circulation 2006) Originally it was thought that the Latino / Hispanic women had a lower risk of heart disease, but recent Los Studies have shown that Hispanic women develop cardiovascular risk factors ten years earlier than white women. (Teeters, 2007) Little information Available on the prevention of cardiovascular diseases specific to the Hispanic / Latino population, because very few trials have been performed in this group alone. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality recently reported that Hispanics are 38% less likely than non-Hispanic visited his doctor in the past year and over 25% of Latin Americans have never had their cholesterol.

Hispanics / Latina women face several obstacles that could impede access to adequate cardiovascular screening:
• Lack of awareness
• Decreased recognition of the value of preventive tests
• Lack of access to culturally sensitive information
• Barriers language
• The financial constraints or lack of insurance (33% uninsured)
• Lack of shipping
• Use to community health centers and clinics

The scope of the problem
Hispanic / Latino (Cuban, American Center of Mexico, Puerto Rico, South America, Dominican Republic, and Spanish ancestry) population is very diverse and is the largest minority group rapidly Growth in the United States.

The following are modifiable risk factors for cardiovascular disease in the Hispanic population:
• Diabetes, as NIH, Hispanics are almost twice as likely as whites to have diabetes
• Overweight and obesity by the NIH, near 83% of women in rural life in Hispanic overweight or obese
• Metabolic Syndrome
• Inactivity, almost 60% of Hispanic women report no regular physical activity
• Pre-hypertension-32% of Hispanic women in their fifties early and mid have pre-hypertension
• Hypertension-over 20% Hispanic women have high blood pressure
• Depression: Hispanic women have higher prevalence of depression life
• Smoking, about 11% of Hispanic women over age 18 smoke
• High cholesterol-women Hispanics tend to have levels of HDL cholesterol and higher triglyceride level

The symptoms of heart attack Women
Women are more likely to experience warning "prodromal" symptoms of days or weeks before a heart attack. These symptoms include chest discomfort, dyspnea, fatigue, palpitations, anxiety, nausea, indigestion, sleep disturbances, changes appetite, visual disturbances, and changes in thought processes. The most common symptoms experienced by prodromal women Hispanic / Latino are fatigue, insomnia and anxiety. In addition, women often have atypical symptoms, when presented with a heart attack. In a recent study by McSweeney, et.al presented at a meeting of the American Heart Association, the most acute symptoms common among Hispanic / Latina women are breathlessness, chest discomfort / back / shoulder, weakness, fatigue and weakness in the arm / heavy.
