Should I get a coronary calcium scan?

I am 20 years old. I Genetic hyperlipidemia (high LDL, low HDL) and a history Family of heart disease. I am fit, active, and eating a very healthy diet (for being a great help to nutrition). At 5'11 "I weigh myself slightly below 160 pounds with a body mass index around 22 (normal range). Currently I am taking Zetia for cholesterol levels (which do not respond well to statins), which has helped reduce levels of LDL some, but not sure if its really worth all the money. I reported on the coronary calcium scan, which assesses the risk for developing heart disease. Was this something I should consider? Any suggestions or comments would be greatly appreciated.

Unless there is a reason (chest pain suspect), I would say no. Honestly, what to do for you now? Sounds like you're doing everything right with food and diet. I can not disagree more with the "pharmacist". His comments (and relatively few others) are against the best of the knowledge current medical. Numerous studies have shown the benefit of reducing cholesterol in the prevention of vascular disease. Best of luck.
