EKG or electrocardiogram is a non- invasive procedure done to monitor the heart. Every beat of the heart is said to be initiated by electrical impulses from certain cells in the right chamber of the heart, these impulses are then recorded by the EKG machine for doctors to diagnose several heart problems. Usually, people with angina on EKG will show abnormal wave results compared to normal people.

An EKG will show whether the heart is functioning normally or correctly. Irregular EKG waves may differ with regards to where the problem in the heart is located. Some heart problems that can be diagnosed through an EKG test are abnormal heart rhythms or arrhythmia, chest pains, coronary artery disease and narrowed or obstructed arteries. In some cases, EKG tests can detect an impending heart attack or a previous heart attack.

EKG results are grouped into various sections. Each of these sections represents one heart beat cycle. In a normal reading, the baseline or when the heart is at rest should supposedly not have any activity. In abnormal readings, Some of the sections will show waves which are longer or shorter than normal waves. Doctors say that angina on EKG will show that in some sections, the waves are taller. They say that this signifies that the patient is going to have a heart attack.

This procedure is considered to be safe and may only have minimal discomforts which happens when the electrodes are removed from the patient’s chest. In some rare occasions, irritation may be seen on the site where the electrodes were placed, but may be remedied through topical creams or just by letting it be. People who undergo stress tests or an EKG while exercising may experience arrhythmia or heart attack but is said to not be caused by the EKG but probably by the exercising. Besides these factors, there no other risks in taking an electrocardiogram test.

Patients who had abnormal EKG results will initially be given medications to help restore the normal beating of the heart, or will prescribe medications to help dilate the arteries or dissolve clots formed by blood. This procedure is considered to be important especially for those who are experiencing sudden recurrent chest pains, as it will give doctors an insight of what the probable cause is and treat the problem immediately if needed. In some cases, doctors may advise patients to undergo some changes in their daily activities, diets or medications, then after some time, will be tested again for angina on EKG.
